Go 4th and Multiply…

We are sitting in the midst of the most chaotic exciting, scary and transformational time in the history of humanity.

Yeah yeah blah blah, I hear you mumble into your double shot vanilla coconut cortado.

Well you better start believing it more than Kevin Costner playing baseball in a corn field.

This post is primarily geared to help you understand the impact for us, over the next few years.

We are at the dawn of the 4th Industrial Revolution. We are sitting on the edge of the cliff, and the world as we know it is going change, with exponential growth in just about everything.

We are 3 revolutions down, with the 4th upon us….

  1. 1765 – Mechanisation, Steam
  2. 1870 – Mass production, Electricity
  3. 1969 – Automation, Computers
  4. Now – IOT, AI, Cyber

To put into context, leading futurologists predict that 65% of jobs kids entering school today have not been invented yet… 65%!!

There is also strong research showing the 4th industrial revolution will bring significantly more job opportunity. The catch is that most of it will be in new technologies and sectors, many of which we cannot even visualise at present.

With this chaos in mind,  get into your onesie and become a modern day Ebeneezer Scrooge. Let’s look to the past, present and future

I have produced a graphic to help explain in more detail…

From this diagram, the main insight I would urge you to think about, is to understand the impact of your approach to the exponential growth that could make the world harder to pick than a broken nose.

Let’s bring this to life by talking about 3 zones…

  • Dead Zone
  • Complexity Zone
  • Future Zone

If you continue trudging along getting a bit better, progress will likely outstrip you and you will enter the Dead-zone. This will result in you becoming Caveman Dad…

We all have a relative that gives often well-intentioned advice that was relevant in the 1950s.

The challenge will be, if you don’t keep up with the program, progress will move so fast, 2019 advice could be the equivalent of 1980s advice in the space of a couple of years. ps. still don’t eat the berries though!

Let’s move on to the Complexity zone.

The complexity zone is where the opportunity lies. It is where you will have to push yourself  to learn, unlearn and relearn to ensure you are equipped for the challenges ahead.

There are three ways to enter complexity…

  1. It is forced upon you
  2. Someone supports you by coaching and mentoring you
  3. You put yourself into it

Option 3 is the best way to get better and maintain control of your environment. Take control before you lose control!

Next up the Future Zone

The future zone is utter perfection, where you are fully equipped to succeed. It is also unachievable. It is there to tell you there is always progress to be made and you need to continue to grow.

The future zone is where you assess where the world is going, and then what you need to do next to maximise your life.

In short, it is an aspirational target that requires you to build your mastery.

  1. How much complexity are you putting yourself in at present to build your capability for the future?
  2. A huge career currency will undoubtedly be emotional intelligence. What do you understand of EI Quotient and how are you building?
  3. How much research are you doing into new technology like AI and IOT to get a basic understanding?
  4. Are you adept at using multiple social media platforms?

We have talked above about using multiple social media platforms, and I would like to expand on their importance in future proofing your social media presence.

For anyone, particularly in business, social media platforms are going to be to equivalent of how we view stock portfolio’s today. The contacts you build on each site will be of key value.

The advice for stock portfolio’s, unless insider trading, was never put all your eggs in one basket. The same is applicable for social media. You could spend years building a Facebook presence, only to find that anyone under the age of 30 wouldn’t be seen dead on it.

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Flickr, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, WhatsApp, Quora….. The list goes on and will continue to grow.

My advice is for you to..

  • Get in early and register with all new platforms
  • For one, it will make sure you get a mint username
  • Keep abreast of what are the hottest platforms, to ensure you have a wide portfolio to connect to whatever your poison is

Introducing Tik Tok…

At the Eurovision song contest 2019 last week Graham Norton listed the platforms on which viewers could connect. Tik Tok was named as one of the platforms, to which he paused and said ‘Yes, I haven’t a clue either!’

Tik Tok is the fastest growing app in the world, currently with the highest number of downloads worldwide, outstripping it’s far more renowned competitors.

Here’s the latest data from MediaKix to back up…

I’m on it, so get with the program Captain Caveman. Like Garlic Bread, it’s the future!
