Hey Mr Beaver…. Stop Beavering Around

As a child of the 80s I can clearly remember the classic adverts featuring the Cadbury’s Caramel Bunny……..

Here is one of the 30 second adverts from 1989. If you can remember it, sit back and reminisce. If you are a stranger to the Cadbury’s Caramel Bunny and her charms, sit back and let it all soak in…

So what’s the relevance of this video then?

For me it is about thinking about your relationship with  Intensity vs Consistency

Let’s start with Intensity…… Lots of people try to drive performance through short bursts of high energy. Like a modern day William Wallace in Braveheart, they thump their chests and rouse the troops to go into battle to win…. Every day feels like it is life or death.

Consistency is very different…… It’s taking a calmer approach accepting that the secret is repetition repetition repetition focusing on better rather than winning, building more sustainable long term results…

Whilst no doubt there will be occasional moments where Intensity is required, I would advocate that Consistency should be where you build your core strategy in both work and life goals.

Some examples. If you want results………………

  1. You can’t brush your teeth for 3 hours on the first day of January and then not bother until February 1
  2. You cant go to the gym for 6 hours one day and then not bother until next month
  3. You can’t give your partner a thousand compliments on their birthday and then tell them that’s it until next year

You need to do the above every single day. In the brushing teeth example, it is twice a day for 3 minutes. Here’s the thing as well….. To achieve results……

  • I can’t tell you how long it will take
  • I can’t tell you why it will work

All I can tell you is that if you keep the faith it will work…. and you will get better..

Here is a build on the insight above. I love asking the question to a group…

What does practice make? The response is almost always…..

Practice makes….

Practice makes Permanent!

Think about it. If your practice is a croc of crap you will remain crap. If you study hard to make your practice better and become a master of your trade your results will improve.

The relevance of this in relation to consistency is that you need to make sure the daily practices you develop align to your goals.

Make that Permanent change now!
